Kolejne wakacje i tym razem wybraliśmy ponownie Karaiby i padło na Jamajkę. Stosunkowo niedrogo, aby tam polecieć, Jamajskie klimaty zapowiadały się ciekawie a rafy są więc jest co zobaczyć również pod wodą. Wybraliśmy się tam na pełne dwa tygodnie pobytu.
Our next holiday spot turned out to be one of the Carribean islands again but this time - Jamaica. Relatively inexpensive holiday, the Jamaican atmosphere was very intriguing and there are reefs as well so there is something to see under water. We decided to go there for a full 2 weeks holiday.
Wybraliśmy miejscowośc Negril, na zachodzie wyspy jako, że w tamtych rejonach raf jest najwięcej i nurkowanie jest najpopularniejsze. Montego Bay też przez chwilę rozważaliśmy jako że tam jest największe skupisko hoteli ale to po prostu miasto, nie ma za bardzo plaży i jak ktoś woli sklepy, kluby i rozrywkę podobnego typu to napewno Montego Bay mu będzie odpowiadać. My wolimy z zasady trochę bardziej 'dziki' i lokalny klimat więc wybraliśmy Negril. W Negril nie dzieje się za wiele i nie ma tu rozrywek za bardzo ale dla nas nurkowanie, plaża (i internet w hotelu) w zupełności wystarczają ;)
We decided to stay in Negril, in the west of the island as there are the most diving spots and diving is the most popular over there. We also considered for a moment to stay in Montego Bay (MoBay) but there are a lot of hotels and it is just a city, with no proper beaches and if you like shopping, clubs, and this type of entertainment then you should definitely stay in MoBay. We prefer more local atmosphere and a bit ‘wild’ areas so we decide to stay in Negril. There is not too much going on in terms of entertainment but for us diving, beach (and internet in the hotel) are enough ;)
Oczywiście kryterium nr 1 w wyborze hotelu to dostęp do internetu 24/7. Inaczej Piotrek nie leci. Padło na Negril Escape Resort & Spa (z darmowym dostępem do internetu w pokojach). Rezerwowaliśmy osobno przelot i osobno hotel bezpośrednio na stronie hotelu. Tak wychodziło dużo taniej niż w pełnych pakietach (samolot + hotel) oferowanych przez wyszukiwarki. Hotel znajduje się mniej więcej 1.5 godziny jazdy od lotniska w Montego Bay i po drodze można sporo wyspy zobaczyć więc zaliczyliśmy dodatkowe zwiedzanie przez szybę busa hotelowego.
In choosing the hotel, internet access 24/7 is a number one facility, otherwise Piotr stays home. So we chose Negril Escape Resort & Spa (with complimentary wifi in the rooms). We booked the flight separately and booked a diving package via hotel’s website. That was much cheaper than the packages (flight + hotel) offered by search engines. The hotel is more or less 1.5h drive from the airport in Montego Bay and going to the hotel by the hotel shuttle bus you can see a lot of the island, so we had some additional sightseeing.
Negril Escape Resort znajduje się przy klifach więc nie ma plaży ale dla nas to nie robiło różnicy bo i tak głównie nurkowaliśmy. Ja z zasady trochę lubię się opalić ale długo mi nie potrzeba i jestem brązowa dosyć szybko więc basen i leżaki przy basenie w zupełności mi wystarczały. W takim klimacie tropikalnym godzina leżenia na słońcu to jest absolutne maximum ile mogę wytrzymać. Z klifów jest zejście do wody i można sobie tam schodzić popływać a tam też schodziliśmy na nurkowanie.
Negril Escape Resort is situated on the cliffs so there is no beach but we didn’t mind as most of the time we went diving. I usually want to get some tan but it doesn’t take too long for me to get brown so staying by the pool is enough for me. Besides in this sort of a tropical climate staying in the sun for up to 1 hour was an absolute maximum. From the cliffs there is also an entry to the water so you can have a swim and we also used this entry when we went diving on the house reef.
Resort składa się z 10 domków (dwu i trzy pozimowych), po dwa pokoje na jeden poziom. Każdy domek jest urządzony w innym stylu. Dostaliśmy pokój w domku Bamboo Avenue na piętrze i nawet mieliśmy ciekawy widok na morze i na zachód słońca dosłownie leżąc w łóżku. Jedynym problemem było to że router internetowy znajdował się w takim miejscu że zasłaniał go nam cały inny domek więc nasze połączenie z internetem było żałosne. I tak po kilku dniach przenieśliśmy się do pokoju na piętrze w Coconut Grove a router znajdował się dosłownie nad naszymi drzwiami więc internet chodził śpiewająco a Piotrek był zadowolony. W resorcie znajduje się też centrum nurkowe i spa czyli wszelkiego rodzaju masaże czy inne podobne zabiegi.
The resort consists of 10 cottages (2 or 3 levels), 2 rooms per level. Every cottage is styled and decorated differently. We got a room in a cottage Bamboo Avenue, upstairs and we had a nice sea view as well plus the perfect sunset we could watch while lying in bed. One problem was that the router was totally blocked by a neighbouring cottage so the signal was very weak. So after a few days we moved to a different cottage - Coconut Grove and the router was exactly by our door so the signal was perfect and Piotr was happy. There is also a dive centre and a spa offering all sorts of massages and other similar therapies.
Z resortu codziennie rano można pojechać busem na siedmiomilową plażę (do siostrzanego resortu), nieodpłatnie, i można spędzić tam cały dzień. Podróż trwa 10 min i bus po południu przyjedzie cię odebrać.
From the resort you can take a hotel shuttle bus (complimentary) and go to the Seven Mile Beach (by the sister resort) and stay there all day. The trip is about 10 min and in the afternoon the bus will pick you up.
W pakiecie mieliśmy tylko zapłacone śniadania - były bardzo dobre i dużo do wyboru, głównie tradycyjne Jamajskie śniadanie czyli ackee z rybą (wizualnie przypomina jajecznicę), trochę po zachodniemu czyli kiełbaski, pomidory, ser czy wędlina, omlety, i duży wybór świeżych owoców.
Popołudniami jadaliśmy w lokalnych ulicznych knajpkach. Właściwie to głównie jadaliśmy w 'domowych' knajpkach czyli buda z wystawionym menu. Budę przeważnie prowadzi rodzinka która mieszka za rogiem, a zarabiają dodatkowo gotując obiady dla turystów. Całkiem wyluzowany klimat i najczęściej jadaliśmy po drugiej stronie ulicy od hotelu w takiej 'domowej' budzie - The Little Sandwich Hut. Interes prowadzi Ali z żoną (i dwójka małych dzieci). Sprzedają w tej swojej budzie jakieś drobne jamajskie gadżety pamiątkowe, owoce, a i przy okazji mają stolik z krzesłami, menu i gotują obiady (głównie dla nas ;) Pyszne lokalne jamajskie jedzenie, duże porcje i zawsze wszystko świeże. Ogólnie jedzenie Jamajskie bardzo nam smakowało, pyszne dania i nawet owoce czy warzywa całkiem inaczej smakowaly niż te z supermarketu w Europie. Wszystko świeże bo lokalnie wyhodowane. Pychota. No i przede wszystkim tanio!
Our package included breakfast only and these were really good and a lot of choice. There was usually some Jamaican breakfast - ackee and the saltfish (looks like scrambled eggs), but there was also a bit of some Western food like sausages, tomatoes, cheese or some ham, omlettes and a great choice of fresh fruit.
In the afternoon we usually ate outside the hotel in the street ‘restaurants’. Mainly we visited ‘home’ huts - small food business with a menu outside and the owners, living round the corner, cook for tourists and earning some cash. A very chilled out atmosphere in all of those and we mainly ate on the other side of the road from our hotel, in The Little Sandwich Hut. The owner of the business is Ali and with his wife they just cook for tourists, if they happen to come (mainly they cooked for us ;) The food was always fresh and well prepared, big portions and real Jamaican experience. In general Jamaican food was really tasty and even fruit or veg tasted differently than those we get in supermarkets in Europe. Everything fresh, organic and grown locally. Delicious! And it was cheap as well!
Resort jest bardzo przyjemny bo jest trochę z dala od popularnej wśród turystów Siedmiomilowej plaży. Dzięki lokalizacji na klifach jest tak bardziej dziko i przyjemniej. Obsługa jest bardzo miła i wszyscy, włącznie z lokalnym 'woźnym' (Pady) byli dla nas zawsze mili. Piotrek tak się zbratał z Pady'm że ten po dwóch sesjach plotkowania zapraszał go na stypę (na Jamajce stypa to impreza wesoła, w stylu wesela, jako że celebruje się i świętuje żywot jaki miała zmarła osoba). Piotrek nie poszedł ale potem żałował bo byłaby to niezłe lokalne doświadczenie.
The resort is a really nice place, a bit further away from the noise and away from the popular among tourists Seven Mile beach. Thanks to the cliffs it is a bit wild place and much pleasant. The service was really nice and everyone was very friendly , including Pady, the local handyman. Piotr actually spoke with Pady quite often and he was even invited to the funeral party, as they celebrate it in a pretty joyous and noisy way (he didn’t go but later was sorry as it would be a nice cultural experience ;)
Z lokalnych atrakcji jakieś 5-10 min piechotą od hotelu znajduje się słynna na Jamajce Rick's Cafe. Tak nam dookoła wszyscy reklamowali więc postanowliśmy zobaczyć cóż to takiego rewelacyjnego tam jest. Knajpa a właściwie sporych rozmiarów restauracjo-bar znajduje się na klifach i jest pełna turystów, głównie Amerykanów. To miejsce jest tak popularne że przyjeżdżają tu autokarami z innych zakątków wyspy. Nie ma w tym miejscu absolutnie nic Jamajskiego i nam się za bardzo nie podobało, czuliśmy się jak na Florydzie (chociaż nigdy tam nie byliśmy ;). Jak szybko weszliśmy tak szybko wyszliśmy. Główną atrakcją są trampolinyna klifach z których turyści popisują się i skaczą do wody.
Zaraz obok knajpy jest kawałek ziemi (cypel) wysunięty jeszcze bardziej w wodę. Stamtąd są widoki na Rick's Cafe i w drugą stronę na latarnię morską Negril. A zachód słońca dużo ciekawszy z tego cypla niż z tej knajpy. Z tego też cypla skaczą tez do wody lokalni Jamajczycy, popisując się przed widownią w Rick's Cafe, jako że ich trampoliny własnoręcznie wykonane i zrobine przy drzewach są jeszcze wyżej niż te Rick's Cafe.
Among the local attractions, about 5-10 min walk from our hotel there is a famous Rick’s Cafe. It was so much advertised by everyone around us that we decide to find out what’s so special about it. It’s a restaurant/bar situated on the cliffs and it is full of tourists, mainly from the USA. The spot is so popular in Jamaica that there are coaches coming with tourists from other parts of the island. Well, there is nothing Jamaican about this place and we didn’t like it too much, felt like Florida (although we’ve never been there ;) We decided not to stay there too long. The main attraction are the tourists jumping off the cliffs.
Right next to the cafe there is a bit of a wild spot, going out a bit further to the sea, where you have the views of the whole cafe, and towards the other side there is also a view of the Negril lighthouse. The sunset was much more interesting from there. And there are also locals showing off in front of the Rick’s Cafe customers, also doing diving from different heights, and the boards are fixed to the top of the trees so they are even higher and their jumps are more impressive ;)
Cały nas pobyt głównie nurkowaliśmy (o tym TUTAJ) a pod koniec pobytu zafundowaliśmy sobie całodniową wycieczkę zwiedzania: Black River Safari (safari po Czarnej Rzece), wodospady YS Falls i na koniec wizyta w Appleton Estate - fabryce rumu Jamajskiego i rumo-pochodnych trunków.
Our main activity during the stay was diving (more details HERE) and at the end of the stay we went for one day of some sightseeing: Black River Safari, YS Falls and at the end Appleton Estate - Jamaican rum factory.
Black River Safari to około godzinny rejs stateczkiem po dzikiej Czarnej Rzece (Black River). Bardzo ciekawie miejsce, dzikie, z ciekawą scenerią dookoła. Rzeka nazywa się Czarna Rzeka bo jej dno jest czarne i rzeka ma kolor czarny ale woda w niej tak naprawdę jest krystalicznie czysta. Główną atrakcją safari są pływające w rzece krokodyle, które są dokarmiane przez przewodników i często to oni je wywabiają z zarośli surowym mięsem. W jednym miejscu nawet można się wykąpać (!) do czego zachęcał nasz przewodnik jako że sam wskoczył do wody i znalazł jeszcze dwóch amatorów. Podejrzewaliśmy, że akurat w tym miejscu aż tyle krokodyli nie ma albo są tyle, że są tak najedzone tym dokarmianiem, że turystów nie atakują ;)
Black River Safari is about an hour boat ride on a wild Black River. It is a very interesting place, a bit wild and with really nice scenery and views. The river’s bottom is black, hence its name, and the river looks black but the water in it is actually crystal clear.
The main attraction are crocodiles swimming in it. They are fed by the guides so sometimes the guides lure them out with some raw meat. In one spot along the river you can also have a swim (!) what our guide did and encouraged others as well, and he successfully had two companions. We suspected that in this spot there aren’t so many crocodiles or they are so full of food already that they don’t attack the swimming tourists ;)
Wodospady YS Falls znajdują się niedaleko Black River. Po zaparkowaniu busem przed głównym wejściem, trzeba jeszcze podjechać pod same wodospady tyle że transport odbywa się dużym ciągnikiem/traktorem ciągnącym wagoniki z siedzeniami, około 5 min. Trasa wiedzie przez pola i łąki, dosyć ciekawe krajobrazy, a na łąkach gdzieniegdzie pasą się brązowe krowy. Wodospady są ładne i wzdłuż nich są porobione stopnie więc można wejść na samą górę i podziwiać po drodze wszystkie kaskady mniejsze i większe. Z samej góry można zjechać na linie podziwiając wodospady z lotu ptaka.
YS Falls are not too far from the Black River. All cars park in front of the main entrance, and then all visitors board a trolley pulled by a tractor and get in it to the falls in about 5 min. The route is via some fields and meadows so there are quite interesting views and there are lots of brown cows grazing here and there. The falls are really nice and there are steps along so you can walk to the top (and back) and admire the falls from different heights and angles. From the top you can ride a canopy right down to the very bottom.
Ostatnim punktem programu była wizyta w Appleton Estate. Jest to fabryka Jamajskiego rumu i innych trunków na bazie rumu. Wycieczka po fabryce trwała jakieś pół godziny podczas której pokazano nam stare metody produkcji rumu i pokazano i opisano cały proces produkcji. Zwiedzanie skończyło się degustacją wszystkich firmowych trunków. Przewodnik tylko opisał po krótce mniej więcej który trunek jaki jest, ile ma %, itp. a potem wystawił wsystkie butle z trunkami, plastikowe jednorazowe kieliszki i podziękował. A grupa zwiedzających mogła próbować wszystkiego w dowolnych ilościach, więc można było się dosłownie upić ;) Piotrek na pamiątkę kupił sobie 21 letni rum a ja kolekcję kilku likerów na bazie rumu, o różnych smakach.
The last place we visited was Appleton Estate. It’s a Jamaican rum and other rum-based alcohols factory. The tour around the factory was about half an hour and we were shown and described the whole process of making rum and also some old methods of its production. The tour ended in the tasting of all the factory made drinks. The guide only showed what sort of products they make, described them in short, how strong they are, etc. and then he took out all the bottles, some plastic cups and said goodbye. The visitors can then have the tasting of anything they want and without limits so you can really get drunk ;) Piotr got himself a souvenir - 21 year old Jamaican rum and I got a few rum-based liqueurs.
Podczas naszego pobytu udało mi się spotkać z moją koleżanką Anią - oryginalnie z Jastrzębia Zdrój i studiowałyśmy razem w Polsce, wyszła za mąż za Jamajczyka i mieszkają w Montego Bay. Przyjemnie było się spotkać na drugim końcu świata ;)
During our stay I had a chance to meet with my friend form Poland - Ania - she is originally from Jastrzebie Zdroj and we went to the university together. She married a Jamaican and they live in Montego Bay. It was a really nice meet up, on the other side of the world ;)
Jamajka jako kraj bardzo nam przypadła do gustu. Kraj piękny, dużo zieleni i dużo pustych terenów. Piotrkowi się tak spodobało że przez chwilę rozważał kupno ziemi na Jamajce. Jest to kraj trzeci na liście od góry pod względem ilości przestępstw, prywante domy (te lepsze) mają kraty w oknach a o pracę jest bardzo trudno i najczęściej trzeba mieć znajomości. Pomimo tego wszyscy są bardzo mili i totalnie wyluzowani. Gandzia jest nielegalna na Jamajce ale wszyscy podpalają. Nikt nigdy nigdzie się nie śpieszy a jak się ktoś umawia na 10:00 to przeważnie jest to 10:20-10:30. To normalne - Jamajskie 10 min trwa dłużej niż Amerykańskie 10 min ;) Nie wykluczamy że jeszcze tu zawitamy ponownie. No problem, yah mon!
Jamaica is a really nice country and we really like visiting it. The island is really beautiful and interesting, very green with lots and lots of empty land. Piotr liked it so much that for a moment he thought of buying some land over here. Jamaica is a third from the top in terms of crime, the private houses (the better ones) all have iron bars in the windows and it is also very difficult to get a job, unless you know someone. But in general people are really nice and veeery chilled out. Ganja is illegal but everyone smokes it and they even organise trips to ganja fields. There is no rush and if you arrange to meet someone at 10, they usually come at 10:20-10:30 and this is normal. There is a difference between Jamaican 10 min and American 10 min ;) The first one is usually much longer. It is highly probable that we will be back here. No problem, yah mon!
